The Fraggles are back. Or check out a rapid-fire new comedy college.
This weekend I have … 11 minutes, and I’m fried.
‘The Last Open Mic at the End of the World’
When to watch: Now, on YouTube or HBO Max.
In this alt comedy short, Megan Koester hosts a sort of drive-in open mic, where comics stay in their cars and she sits in a warehouse, occasionally responding through a bullhorn. As with real open mics, the proffered jokes here are a grab bag, but unlike real open mics, this zips through 16 different comics who deliver one or two jokes as quickly as possible; the highlight is the show’s Covid compliance officer doing his own little set. If internet poisoning has warped your tastes such that you appreciate lists of esoteric good tweets, watch this.
… a half-hour, and I like whimsy.
‘Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock’
When to watch: Arrives Friday, on Apple TV+.
Revival mania continues with this return to Fraggle Rock, which is mercifully faithful to the quirky, wistful original. The main gang is back; Sprocket the dog is back; Uncle Traveling Matt is back; the Doozers; the theme song; the lessons about the nature of wisdom, about ecological stewardship, mutuality, the pursuit self-acceptance and the marvels of emotions are all back. The biggest change is a shift to a crisper visual style. Four seasons of the original “Fraggle Rock” are also streaming on Apple TV+, as is “Fraggle Rock: Rock On!,” a series of shorts that were released in the spring of 2020.
… 40 minutes, and I like people.
‘True Story With Ed & Randall’
When to watch: Now, on Peacock.
Ed Helms and Randall Park host this sweet show that feels like a cross between “This American Life” and “Drunk History.” On each episode, Helms and Park sit down with someone with a wild story: a guy who sneaked in to the Super Bowl, a young Muslim woman who loved pro wrestling as a kid and channeled that into running for school president. The show cuts between the studio interview and goofy, heightened re-enactments, and it’s all very endearing. If you want something warm but not unbearably schlockola, or if you are in the market for something you like but don’t feel compelled to binge, watch this.
