Snow to hit Massachusetts this week; As much as 2 to 5 inches expected - MassLive.com

Massachusetts will see a light blanket of snow later this week.

Forecasters are anticipating what they described as a “light accumulating snow event,” where a warm front will bring wintry precipitation to the state late Tuesday. Snow is expected to continue falling until early Wednesday.

As much as 2 to 5 inches of snow should fall across the interior of the state. Western and Central Massachusetts will be hit the hardest by the precipitation, according to the National Weather Service.

In Western Massachusetts, 5 inches of snow is expected to fall in northern and central Berkshire County around Pittsfield. Three to 4 inches should fall in western parts of the Pioneer Valley, and Springfield will see closer to 2 inches, the weather service said.

Two inches is expected to fall in Worcester, and only around an inch is forecast in Boston. A coating of snow, less than an inch, will be seen on Cape Cod and along the rest of the state’s coast, according to officials.

Snowfall may impact travel, and winter weather advisories may be needed for the interior of Massachusetts. However, the probability of widespread hazardous weather is low, forecasters noted.

In terms of timing, snow should start falling in the Berkshires as early as 1 p.m. Tuesday. Precipitation will then spread to the Pioneer Valley and parts of Central Massachusetts by 7 p.m. The rest of the state will see snowflakes beginning around 10 p.m., according to the weather service.

“Temperatures should be near to slightly above normal during this time,” the agency said.

Precipitation will end in the Berkshires and Pioneer Valley between 7 and 8 a.m. Wednesday. In northern parts of the state around Fitchburg, snow should stop falling closer to 11 a.m. Snowfall is expected to end across much of Central and Eastern Massachusetts between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to officials.

Another lighter round of precipitation may be in store for Central and Eastern Massachusetts late Wednesday, with snow expected to mix with rain across the coast, forecasters said.

According to the weather service, the light snowfall event should be followed by much colder air, some of the chilliest air expected to hit the state this year. Sub-zero wind chills will hit the interior of Massachusetts late Thursday and spread across southern New England on Friday.

The forecast is subject to change more than 72 hours out.
