ROCKFORD (WREX) — Quiet weather lingers for a few days longer, but rain and snow return by the end of the week. Behind late-week rain and snow showers, much cooler air settles into the Stateline for the weekend.
Through Wednesday:
Dry weather persists through midweek with a return to at least some sunshine likely Tuesday and Wednesday.
After eleven consecutive days of cloudy skies for the start of 2021, that glowing orb in the sky called the sun returns. Sunshine is likely be filtered with at least some cloud cover. After a long period of cloudy skies, few complaints will be had over filtered sunshine.
Highs Tuesday and Wednesday will be highly dependent upon how much sunshine the region sees. If more clouds than sun persist, temperatures are likely to be on the cooler side of the going forecast. However, if sunshine reigns supreme, temperatures could climb even further than the current forecast.
Forecast highs through midweek should climb into the middle 30s ahead of an approaching cold front Thursday. The warmest day of the week is likely to be Thursday, but temperatures come tumbling by the end of the work week.
Thursday's threat for rain, snow:
A well-advertised cold front is set to move into the Stateline by the second half of the work week. Temperatures Thursday still should manage to climb close to 40° as a southwest wind pulls in warmer temperatures ahead of that cold front.
Precipitation moves in by the afternoon Thursday, likely in the form of a chilly rain, possibly mixed with a few snowflakes. As colder air fills in behind the cold frontal passage, a transition to all snow appears likely.
Between Thursday and Friday, a general inch or two of snow could fall. While this isn't much in terms of accumulation, it could lead to slick travel for Friday morning's commute.
Snow showers persist off-and-on through much of Friday, with minor accumulations expected with that activity.
Cooling off for the weekend:
Snow showers taper off by Saturday, leaving behind much cooler temperatures. Highs both Saturday and Sunday only manage to get into the mid-20s, with lows in the teens looking probably.
Even colder temperatures look possible to start the next work week, with M.L.K. Day featuring lows below 10°.
