MARSHALL — The mood was festive at Hill Street Place as residents sat down to enjoy refreshments in the dining room.

Dana Funk was playing Christmas music on the piano, and special guests Santa and Mrs. Claus were greeting residents around the room.

“Do you have any plans for Christmas?” Santa asked as he chatted with residents.

Residents and staff at Hill Street Place said this holiday season, things felt different than they did a year ago. While the congregate living center is still taking precautions against COVID-19, residents are once again able to gather for social events like Thursday’s “Christmas Cheer” event.

“Morale is so much better,” Hill Street Place housing manager Susie Sammons said Thursday.

Like other senior living centers across Minnesota, Hill Street Place restricted visitors and group activities in the spring of 2020 to protect against COVID. When the restrictions relaxed starting this spring, it was good to see the positive impact on residents.

“We have been fortunate here that throughout the whole thing, they’ve been able to be social within Hill Street Place,” Sammons said.

But being able to gather together for social events again — even for things like morning coffee — has made a big difference, residents said.

“That helps,” said resident Darleen Gladitsch.

“It’s better than it was last year,” Darlene Deutz said.

Some residents said Thursday that they planned to spend Christmas with family.

Joanna Thompson said she was going to have a few family members come visit at her apartment. Ann Carver said she’s already been to visit her family for Christmas.

“It’s great to be out with the family,” Carver said. “That’s the wonderful thing for me, at least.”

Even with the return of holiday celebrations and events like the Christmas program, Hill Street Place residents are still taking COVID safety precautions.

For example, instead of having all Hill Street residents together for this year’s Christmas dinner, residents had meals delivered to their apartments, said resident Margaret Rewerts.

“We’ve gotten along really well by being careful,” Rewerts said. “You just do what you have to do. The world is so different.”
