CLEVELAND, Ohio – How popular is Cleveland when it comes to Christmas? And how much Christmas spirit does Ohio have?
A couple of websites have analyzed the topics. One site says Cleveland is the 18th best among 100 U.S. cities for Christmas, while another ranks Ohio as 10th best for Christmas spirit.
Cleveland’s ranking comes from personal-finance website WalletHub, which studies assorted topics from sports to money and more and is open about its methodology. For the Christmas ranking, it analyzed more than 30 variables under three main categories - traditions and fun; observances and generosity. Variables studied include the number of ice-skating rinks and churches per capita, online giving, Christmas-tree farms and others.
Cleveland ranked 39th for traditions and fun, ninth for observances and 36th for generosity.
Other Ohio cities in the compilation and their overall ranking:
8. Cincinnati
58. Columbus
77. Toledo
Atlanta – a city that gets about 2 inches of snow a year – finished atop the ranking of best places for Christmas.
For the Christmas-spirit study, realestatewitch.com looked at recreational spending, shopping, online searches, charity, Christmas music and more.
The site had this to say in part about the Buckeye state:
“In 2020, Ohio residents contributed $6.1 million to the Salvation Army, earning a place as the fifth-most charitable state in the nation. It’s especially impressive given the low density of Red Kettles, with just 0.6 per 10,000 residents.” It also gave a shoutout to A Christmas Story house in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.
Florida, Utah and Idaho came out as the top three states with most Christmas spirit.
