Portland Friday weather: Much of Oregon under air stagnation advisory through Saturday - OregonLive

Deteriorating air quality is possible for a great swath of Oregon through Saturday as high pressure traps pollutants at the surface.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service had issued an air stagnation advisory earlier in the week, but strong east winds were helping to keep Portland’s air mostly in the “good” category as of Thursday. An early Friday morning check of air quality at airnow.gov showed “moderate” air across much of the state with pockets of “unhealthy for sensitive groups” especially in far south central Oregon.

The advisory stays in effect until 10 p.m. Saturday for locations below 1,500 feet in the metro area and along the Willamette Valley. Poor air quality can cause health issues for those with respiratory problems. Residents should check with health care providers if they feel they may be at risk.

The weather service notes that state air quality agencies have recommended that no outdoor burning occur during the advisory. Residential wood burning should be limited as much as possible. Check with local burn agencies for current restrictions.

Portland may see some haze from poor air quality Friday, but skies generally should be clear and sunny. The high temperature will be around 53 degrees.

Saturday will bring increasing clouds and the possibility for some light showers from late afternoon through the evening. The highs will be near 50 degrees.

Showers may linger into early Sunday but should move off before 10 a.m. Skies will then turn partly sunny with a high of near 51 degrees.

Snow levels are expected to stay around 5,000 feet when Saturday’s front moves through. This should limit any new snow accumulation to elevations above pass levels.

Current long-range forecasts show Monday as a dry but cloudy day, and hint at wet weather for the middle of next week.
