Gal Gadot returns as the feminist comic book icon Wonder Woman in “Wonder Man 1984,” which is the titular character’s second solo film.

The sequel’s synopsis, according to IMDb, is “rewind to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing two all-new foes: Max Lord and The Cheetah.”

Watch the trailer below:

The original film was released in 2017 and marked Gadot’s second performance as Wonder Woman. She made her cinematic debut in the role in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016. The original “Wonder Woman” film centers the character’s origins like most first films in superhero franchises. As IMDb puts it in the synopsis: “when a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.”

The original film holds a fresh rating of 93 percent and an audience score of 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of publication). The film made an estimated $822 million globally at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

Though, the sequel is coming out amid the coronavirus pandemic. Movie theaters have largely been shut down throughout 2020 with the exception of some re-openings. The closing of theaters either moved some films to streaming services or pushed back a slew of them to 2021, all originally slated for 2020 theatrical release. “Wonder Woman 1984″ was originally supposed to be released in late 2019 before moving to a June 5, 2020 release date. That June date was interrupted by the ongoing pandemic.

“Wonder Woman 1984″ still hit some theaters internationally on Wednesday, Dec. 16. The film hasn’t gotten the big theatrical release like originally expected. Though, DCEU fans need not fear. The film will stream exclusively on HBO Max, starting Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2020.

Consumers can subscribe to HBO Max for $14.99 monthly or prepay for six months of the app (an offer that lasts until Jan. 15, 2021). HBO Max can also be bundled (or added on) via Hulu.
