Marty Walsh: ‘Not much more we can do’ on coronavirus as Boston sees another big daily case jump - Boston Herald

Boston added a massive 542 coronavirus cases on Thursday, continuing what Mayor Martin Walsh called a “significant uptick” — and he said “there’s not much more we can do” other than to begin to shut businesses down again if it keeps getting worse in the next few days.

The Boston Public Health Commission released that new number Thursday afternoon, after a stretch of three days that saw 232, 407 and 418 cases in a sudden jump to marks not seen for months.

The 542 new cases brings the total to 28,595 confirmed cases, with 23,045 people recovered and 929 dead. Four of those deaths were reported Thursday.

Earlier in the day, Walsh spoke to reporters, saying he has “major concerns” about the direction the city’s coronavirus numbers are headed, when two weeks before Thanksgiving they seemed to be trending in the right direction. Even before Thursday’s numbers were out, the mayor called Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s marks “a significant uptick.”

“The biggest part of my concern’s stemming from hospitalization — seeing that number go up,” Walsh said. The city’s semiweekly report on Wednesday of various coronavirus metrics showed hospital visits up, but the number of beds available trending slightly in the right direction.

Asked if he’s considering a rollback, Walsh said, “not at this particular moment, but we can do that pretty much on a moment’s notice.”

Walsh said “it’s incumbent on all of us” to take individual responsibility to help slow the spread of the virus — wear masks, social distance, get tested.

Asked what he and the city can do about this surge, Walsh said, “There’s not much more we can do other than shutting down, and that’s a last resort.”

He continued, “I mean, the next step is shutting everything down — that’s the next step. And we’ve done that before and, you know, we’re three weeks away from Christmas. Our retailers need the people going out and shopping. Restaurants need people to eat out. People are working — they need to make money.”

“I mean, that’s the last resort, is wanting to shut things down,” the mayor continued. “But, but as these numbers continue to go up — you know, maybe Tuesday I’m standing here, I can be talking about putting plans out for shutting things down, but hopefully I’m talking about how we’re seeing the number go the other way again.”
