Nuggets coach Michael Malone hasn’t seen Will Barton since he left the “Bubble” on Aug. 19, but in conversations with him and the team’s trainers, Malone said he’s in a “much better place,” than he was months ago.
Barton left Orlando due to a nagging right knee injury which led to soreness in other areas of his body, The Denver Post reported in August. Since then, Barton’s been in Miami training and rehabbing during the shortest offseason in NBA history.
“He feels a lot better,” Malone said. “I think he’s in a very good place mentally coming into camp.”
Malone noted that Barton was in track 2 of the league’s COVID precautions along with most of the team’s other veterans, meaning they won’t be back in the team’s facility until Thursday. And though he hadn’t seen him yet, Malone said his conversations with Barton were encouraging.
“He’s in a much better place than he was back in Orlando many months ago,” Malone said. “Hopefully that translates well. We’ll see how he is once we start camp as a team on Dec. 6.”
Malone, speaking on the first day of training camp, said he thinks the starting shooting guard, small forward and power forward positions are all up for grabs. Barton will have to win his starting job back, just like he did last season following an open competition at training camp.
Nuggets guard Monte Morris made it sound like he’d been in regular communication with Barton and offered perhaps the most promising prognosis yet.
“He said he got back everything he had,” Morris told reporters on Tuesday. “He’s back dunking the ball and said he felt the best, right now, that he ever felt.”
Barton told Morris that his biggest hurdle will be conditioning. After playing in one half of a scrimmage in Orlando, Barton’s last NBA game was on March 11 when the season shut down.
“His biggest thing was having his body right, his mental right,” Morris said. “He’s ready to go. He said it’s time to take it to the next level every time we’ve talked. I’m looking forward to it.”
