Stanford spiced up its 2021 recruiting class Wednesday when Dallas offensive lineman Austin Uke signed a letter of intent, turning down 13 other Power 5 offers.

The Cardinal still failed to crack the top half of the Pac-12 recruiting rankings in 247sports.com or Rivals.com. Stanford finished eighth in both rankings. It was ranked 51st overall by 247sports and 50th by Rivals.

Stanford coach David Shaw said he didn’t know where his 2021 class is ranked, but added that it’s too low.

“Our class is very underrated,” he said on a conference call. “There is no way we should be ranked as low as the services have us.”

Only defensive end Aaron Armitage earned a four-star rating from both 247sports and Rivals. Originally from Ontario, Canada, he played his high school football at Blair Prep in New Jersey.

Uke didn’t really catch fire with recruiters until last spring. By the time he signed on Wednesday, he had offers from USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Northwestern and many others.

“He’s a tackle with length and athleticism,” Shaw said of the 6-4, 265-pounder. “He could probably play anywhere he wants to on the offensive line. He had a mad-rush of offers last spring. He made a lot of improvements.”

Uke prepped at Parish Episcopal School in Dallas. He was joined on Wednesday by walk-on Will Gibson, a center who played at Highland Park High in Dallas.

In all, the Cardinal announced 23 newcomers between the early and late signing dates. Twelve are from states with teams in the SEC. There were players from every position but tight end.

The only quarterback is three-star Ari Patu from Folsom.

“Who cares what the rankings are,” Shaw said. “Everyone who’s seen him says, ‘Wow!’”
