Snowstorm update: How much fell, how much left to fall - MLive.com

The storm has pretty well behaved as forecasted up to 7 a.m. Tuesday. Now the storm is breaking down quickly. The accumulating snow will end about three hours earlier than forecasted yesterday.

So there are still a few inches of snow left to fall, mostly in the immediate Detroit area and the Thumb.

Here’s a look at a few of the snow totals so far early this morning. The reports have been sparse so far, but I’ll give you what has been reported.

Detroit Metro Airport reported 5.4 inches as of 1:30 a.m. Given the snow showing on radar, I’d estimate the west side of the Detroit area and Metro Airport at around seven inches as of 7 a.m.

White Lake, Novi, Columbiaville and Flint were all reporting about 4.5 inches as of 1:30 a.m. Again, continued snow after 1:30 a.m. means probably an additional two inches on top of the evening snow.

The Grand Rapids area is reporting around five to six inches of snow. The heavier end of that range has fallen just southeast of Grand Rapids, and lighter amounts northwest of Grand Rapids.

The Lansing area is reporting between six and nine inches of snow so far, with drifting snow.

The Winter Storm Warnings are set to expire at noon today. That gives you a good feel for when the worst of the snow will be over, and travel conditions will go from dangerous to less dangerous. With the cold temperatures in the teens and wind gusts to 25 mph, roads won’t just instantly improve after noon.

The storm is now rapidly breaking down. The area of snow is expected to shrink considerably between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. There will still be pockets of moderate snow around the Detroit area and the Thumb.

Here’s the radar forecast into afternoon, showing the quick breakdown of the storm.

radar

Radar forecast from 8 a.m. today to 3 p.m. today

Do expect some heavy lake effect at the south end of Lake Michigan if you are driving to Chicago.

Here’s the model I like best now for additional snow to fall today.

total add snow

Total ADDITIONAL snow from 7 a.m. to end of snow today.

Look for another one to two inches over most of Lower Michigan, with the exception of Traverse City to Gaylord and northward to the bridge. You won’t have any new snow in the north.

The Detroit area will probably lean toward the additional two inches, while the rest of southern Lower looks for another inch of snow.

The Thumb Counties of Lapeer, Sanilac, Tuscola and Huron should get another two to four inches of snow before mid-afternoon.

When it’s done, it will go down as a widespread six to eight inch snow for southern Michigan.
