Nor’easter to hit much of Massachusetts with 12-18 inches of snow; Winter storm warning now issued for nearly - MassLive.com

Update: These 20 maps from the National Weather Service show what Massachusetts can expect from the nor’easter.

Massachusetts is in for its harshest winter storm of the season yet.

The nor’easter is expected to sweep through the state Wednesday evening through Thursday, bringing heavy snow, strong winds and minor coastal flooding to southern New England, according to forecasters.

A winter storm advisory issued for the entire region Tuesday was upgraded to a warning Wednesday morning for nearly all of Massachusetts, excluding the Cape and Islands. More than a foot of snow is forecast throughout state, officials said.

Forecasters anticipate road conditions will deteriorate quickly due to speedy snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour and have urged residents to travel with extreme caution due to the major storm, according to the National Weather Service.

“Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” the federal agency said. “The hazardous conditions could impact overnight travel as well a the Thursday morning commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.”

Snow will move into the state from the southwest and start falling across much of the Pioneer Valley, Worcester area and Bristol County around 7 p.m. The precipitation will then spread to the rest of the state by about 8 or 9 p.m., hitting Essex County last by roughly 11 p.m., according to forecasters.

Earlier forecasts predicted Southeastern Massachusetts would be hit the hardest by the precipitation. However, expected snowfall amounts in the area were lowered slightly due to a brief period of above-freezing temperatures now forecast early Thursday that may cut into accumulations, forecasters noted.

Instead, the interior of the state looks like it will receive the highest snowfall totals, with 12-18 inches expected in Berkshire County, the Pioneer Valley and Worcester County. Some uncertainties remain in the forecast, though, the weather service said.

“There is high confidence in these interior areas receiving the most snow in general, though the exact snow amounts still are uncertain,” the agency said.

Most of Eastern Massachusetts, from as far north as Lawrence to as far south as New Bedford, is expected to see 8-12 inches of snow, according to forecasters. Middlesex County and Greater Boston as well as Essex, Norfolk, Plymouth and Bristol counties are included in this prediction.

The Cape and Islands will see far lesser amounts, with Cape Cod receiving anywhere between 1 and 6 inches of snow. Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket should get closer to an inch, the weather service said.

Forecasters are also warning about the potential for strong winds, which should steadily increase overnight. Gusts of 30-40 miles per hour are expected across the state, though greater gusts of 45-55 mph may hit Eastern Massachusetts mid-morning Thursday and last into the afternoon, according to the agency.

“Such gusts could yield tree damage and result in scattered power outages,” the weather service said.

A flood advisory remains in effect for the eastern coast of the state, where up to 1 foot of inundation is forecast in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Waves will likely cause coastal roads to be washed over around high tide Thursday, according to forecasters.

“If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property,” the weather service said.

The storm system should pull away by Thursday afternoon, with snow expected to then taper off, according to officials.
