The cost of running a Super Bowl ad generally increases over the years, and that’s a decades-long trend for the biggest football game of the year. But in 2021 compared with last year, the price of ads for Super Bowl 55 stayed about the same.

According to Variety, CBS has been asking for about $5.5 million for a 30-second in-game ad for Sunday’s Super Bowl 55 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And the network was “virtually sold out” at the end of January.

In 2020, a Super Bowl commercial for the same length of time cost about $5.6 million, which was an increase from $5.2 million for 30 seconds in 2019, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Now, just because companies are still shelling out millions for ad time doesn’t mean all the usual companies are buying spots this year. As Variety noted, Super Bowl staples like Anheuser-Busch, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are not running ads for their flagship brands this year, so don’t expect tear-jerking moments from Budweiser with Clydesdales and puppies.
