One of the most notable changes in our Michigan climate over the past few decades is a warmer fall season. Some interesting data graphics show us the trend toward warmer falls.

I’ll show you the trend at two cities in southern Michigan. The rest of Lower Michigan follows this warming trend. One interesting oddity is Marquette, in the Upper Peninsula, does not follow this warming trend for fall.

Meteorological fall is September, October and November. We do this for just this reason below: it’s much easier to gather seasonal data. The astronomical fall season varies in start and end dates each year depending on the date of the equinoxes and solstices, but meteorological fall follows the calendar months.

The change of the average fall temperature is a little over three degrees between the 1960s and now. To put this in perspective, we now get 270 degrees of extra warmth in the afternoon, taking three degrees per day times 90 days in the season.

Grand Rapids has also warmed considerably during the fall season over the past five decades.

Have you noticed more fall afternoon that seem to be warmer than you remember in your younger years? The statistics show you that you aren’t just imagining things. Detroit now has 14 more days that measure warmer than the current long-term average temperature. This is significant because we notice warm days compared to what we expect on a particular September, October or November day.

Grand Rapids has 11 more days with warmer than normal temperatures in fall.

Michigan isn’t the only state with a fall warming trend. In fact, most of the U.S. has a warming trend in fall. The only areas that don’t have a decisive warming trend are the mid-Mississippi Valley and parts of the Southeast.

The Southwest is three-and-a-half degrees warmer in fall now as compared to the 1960s.

In most years, you can now take a summer-like vacation in early September. Fall color tours seem to be a week later now compared to earlier in life. The start of bow deer season can often be a very warm day, well into the 70s - like it is today.
