Here's how much rain fell in the past 48 hours across the SF Bay Area - SFGate

A moisture-packed atmospheric river barreled across the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday into Monday, drenching the region to kick off the rainy season.

"It was about what we anticipated," said National Weather Service meteorologist Sean Hayes of how the storm unfolded. "It was a strong event, anomalously strong for this time of year."

Local meteorologist Jan Null of Golden Gate Weather Services created a Bay Area Storm Index that ranks storms by strength, based on wind and rainfall totals, using data going back to 1950. The recent atmospheric river tied with two other events for third-strongest storm in 71 years.

"It was well forecast," Null said. "If anything, it might have delivered slightly more rain than what the computer models forecast."

The weather service released storm totals — looking at total rainfall across 48 hours for key locations with gauges — Monday Morning. The weather gauge in downtown San Francisco recorded a total of 4.02 inches of rain on Oct. 24, making it the wettest October day ever and the fourth-wettest day ever with records going back to the Gold Rush.

Scattered showers continued to bring wet weather to the Bay Area on Monday morning, but these are expected to taper off through the day, with dry conditions arriving by Monday night.

"Most of the stuff left is going to be pretty light and passing through," Miller said. "We’re done with the main wind and the heaviest stuff."
