Just how much rain fell in Alabama last night? - AL.com

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has released a list of rain reports from around central Alabama following Wednesday night’s widespread flash flooding.

The weather service issued a rarely-used flash flood emergency for part of the Birmingham metro area on Wednesday night after slow-moving storms dropped heavy rain repeatedly over the same areas.

Two were killed in north Alabama and two are missing in central Alabama following Wednesday’s flooding, according to officials:

The Marshall County Emergency Management Agency issued a local area emergency for western Marshall County on Thursday morning, relayed by the weather service.

Officials said numerous roads across the western part of the county, including the city of Arab, “have been closed or damaged due to flooding overnight. Local officials encourage motorists to use extreme caution if you must drive today. Non-essential travel is discouraged while roads are being checked and evaluated.”

The Pelham and Hoover areas were some of the hardest hit in the Birmingham metro area, according to rainfall reports from the weather service.

One spot in the Pelham area reported 10.21 inches of rain, according to the weather service.

Parts of north Alabama were also hit hard by flooding. The National Weather Service in Huntsville said late Wednesday that there were widespread 9 inch rainfall estimates in the area between New Hope and Arab.

Some of the other totals from observing spots around central Alabama:

* Near the BJCC: 8.08 inches

* Helena: 6.85 inches

* Hoover: 6.82 inches

* Arab: 6.63 inches

* Pelham: 6.59 inches

* Vestavia Hills: 6.15 inches

* Trafford: 4.28 inches

* Pinson: 3.48 inches

* Alabaster: 3 inches

* Bessemer: 2.96 inches

* Birmingham: 2.58 inches

See the complete list from the weather service here.

Flash flood watches continue for part of Alabama through tonight. Forecasters warn that it won’t take much rain to cause flooding thanks to saturated ground conditions.

Drier air is coming, and the weekend should be rain-free for many in the state.
