Jalen Hurts doesn't think Eagles put too much of offense on his shoulders: 'I see it as I'm not doing enough' - CBS Sports

Jalen Hurts struggled throwing the football for the second consecutive week on Thursday night, which led to the Philadelphia Eagles problems on offense throughout their loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hurts completed just 46.2% of his passes (12 of 26) for 115 yards with a touchdown and an interception, as the Eagles called pass plays on 59.57% of the snaps -- below their season average of 62.61%.

While the pass-run ratio isn't a full indicator of how the flow of the game dictates the offense, the Eagles have been asking a lot out of Hurts over the past week. The results haven't been ideal. In the Eagles' last two games, Hurts has completed only 54% of his passes (34 of 63) for 313 yards with one touchdown to two interceptions. The result has been an inept offense with Hurts throwing the ball 60.6% of the designed plays.

Are the Eagles giving a quarterback with just 10 career starts too much responsibility?

"I see it as I'm not doing enough," Hurts said after the loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "I'm not doing enough right now to win. I'm not doing enough to start fast. We all know that this is a team sport and that it takes a collective group, and it takes all 11. But that one in the 11 is me, and it starts with me, and I will be better."

The Eagles didn't really give Hurts an opportunity to settle in, running a bunch of run-pass options instead of designed runs against a Tampa Bay defense that came into the game ranked first against the run. Philadelphia finished with 100 rushing yards in the game, the first team to hit the century mark against the Buccaneers since Super Bowl LV. The Eagles averaged 5.3 yards per carry against a run defense that allowed just 2.9 yards per rush entering the game.

"I think this offense is executing well enough," Hurts said. "I think I haven't executed well enough to win clearly. I take responsibility for that. I always take responsibility for that because the ball is in my hands every play and I enjoy that and I like that. I have to be better."

Whether the Eagles are asking too much out of Hurts is up for debate. This season is about determining if Hurts is the franchise quarterback, but he may not be getting much help due to the lack of motion plays and designed runs.

Perhaps the Eagles want to give Hurts as many pass attempts as he can to see if he can improve from week to week. Hurts is caught between a rock and a hard place right now, one which he can rectify by being more accurate, sustaining drives, and winning games.

"I think we have everything we need here in Philadelphia. We have everything," Hurts said. "We're going toe-to-toe with every team that we play, but we're shooting ourselves in the foot. We have to take better advantage of our opportunities, and it starts with me.

"I have unwavering faith in everybody we have here. It's a matter of putting it all together and making it flow."
