Early Goals Too Much for Women's Soccer to Overcome in Loss - Wheeling University Athletics

Institute, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (3-6-1, 2-5-1) traveled to Institute, West Virginia, on Monday for their first-ever match-up with West Virginia State. However, two early Yellow Jackets goals were too much for the Cardinals to overcome as they fell 2-1, picking up their fifth conference loss of the season.

Early on, it was West Virginia State that had the offensive game working, needing just seven minutes to get on the board. WV State's Cierra Savin took a pass from Brooklyn Pritt and shot it past Yarwood to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. The two teams went back and forth for the rest of the first half, with WV State outshooting Wheeling 7-4. That advantage would pay off late in the first half when the Yellow Jackets extended their lead in the 36th minute of the game. The Yellow Jacket's Fran Soares-Cupertino took a pass and found the net to bring the score to 2-0 WV State.

The two teams went into halftime with that same score, as Yarwood was able to make three saves in that first half. Wheeling was still within striking distance but had some work to do to get back on top. They were efficient with their shooting, putting two of their four first-half shots on net, but they needed to find a way past the keeper. They were looking for a quick-strike offense, and that would be provided thanks to senior forward Braedynn Porter.

It took the Cardinals just 22 seconds into the second half to get on the board as Porter took the opening kick-off up the field. She weaved her way through Yellow Jacket defenders and got a shot on net that found the back of the net and brought the score to 2-1. It was the fifth shot of the day by Wheeling, and the third to land on net, and they would have to keep that efficiency going the rest of the game. However, Wheeling would get just three more shots off in the second half, and none of them would be on net. Despite their best efforts, they ended up falling 2-1, picking up their fifth MEC loss of the season.

Senior Kenadee Burgoyne got the most shots off for Wheeling on the day with three, but Porter put the most shots on net with two. Tayler Wells got her third consecutive start and fired off two shots of her own in the loss. Mikayla Yarwood returned to net for the Cardinals, playing all 90 minutes of the game while allowing two goals and making three saves. Despite the defenses best efforts to hold off the Yellow Jackets over the final 54 minutes of play, the offense just didn't create many opportunities, leading to the loss for the Cardinals.

The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team is back in action when they return home to face the University of Charleston on Wednesday at 4 PM.
