CHICAGO – DePaul women's volleyball fell 3-0 to conference foe Connecticut on Saturday evening at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
With the loss, DePaul's five match win streak was snapped, and the Blue Demons move to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST action. UConn improves to 11-6 in the fall of 2021 and 3-1 in conference play.
Set scores of the match were 21-25, 20-25, 27-29
Jill Pressly led a balanced attack for the Blue Demons with a team-high 11 kills paired with nine digs and three blocks. Emma Price was steady on the right side with 10 kills at a .304 attack efficiency.
Aly Kindelberger and Bailey Nelson chipped in seven kills apiece and totaled four and three blocks, respectively. Libero Rachel Krasowski picked up a team-high 12 digs.
Freshman Ashley Cudiamat nearly matched her career-high with 25 assists.
UConn outside hitter Caylee Parker tallied a match-high 16 kills at a .483 clip while Allie Garland put down 13 kills with a .476 efficiency.
How it Happened:
Set One – Both sides traded points through the first 26 points of the first set. The Blue Demons gained a two-point advantage at 15-13 on a pair of Husky errors. A Kindelberger kill followed by a Pressly solo blocked gave DePaul a 20-18 advantage and forced a UConn timeout. Out of the break, the Huskies responded with seven of the next eight points to take the first set.
Set Two – A back-and-forth affair transpired in the second frame as well as the score was knotted at nine through the first 18 rallies. A Blue Demons attack error put the Huskies in front 14-11 before DePaul strung together a 4-0 run to knot the score at 17 and force a UConn timeout. After the pause in play, a Husky ball handling error put DePaul in front for the first time since 6-5. UConn won five of the next six points to reclaim the lead 22-19 and closed out the set on a Taylor Pannell termination.
Set Three – Trailing 21-17 with their backs against the wall, the Blue Demons turned up the energy and staved off a pair of match points on a Pressly kill and a huge Kindelberger and Nelson block on the outside to tie the set at 24. Kindelberger put down her seventh ball of the match to give DePaul a set point at 25-24. Donna Brown came in swinging from the middle to give the Blue Demons another opportunity leading 27-26 but the Huskies answered. Consecutive kills from UConn's Jasmine Davis put the match away for the visiting Huskies.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "We came out flat tonight. The silver lining is that we were able to match them kill for kill, we just weren't able to string together a lot of momentum. This group is young and figuring out how to win despite being flat. We played a veteran led team and that showed a lot. As we have done all year, we will grow and learn from this. I have full faith in this teams competitiveness and resolve, and we will come back fighting tomorrow."
Up Next: The Blue Demons welcome Marquette to McGrath-Phillips Arena on Sunday, Oct. 3 for a 3 p.m. first serve. The Golden Eagles took down Connecticut 3-1 on Friday evening and enter Sunday's matchup 12-2 on the season and 3-0 in the BIG EAST.
