After a year's worth of fundraising efforts, Penn State's Thon pushed boundaries once again, raising over $11 million.
In total, the event this year raised $11,696,942.38, which will be used to provide medical treatment, research and support for families battling childhood cancer.
This surpasses last year's total of $10,621,683.76, but the record still remains at the $13.34 million raised in 2014. In its 47 years, Thon has raised over $167 million.
Thon, a 46-hour dance marathon held on Penn State's campus, typically draws thousands of students who trade sleep for a 46-hour dance marathon, standing alongside pediatric cancer survivors and their families.

The dance marathon was first organized in 1973 by a group of students seeking an opportunity to give back to their community. It has since grown into the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, both in revenue and volunteer participation. Each year, more than 16,500 student volunteers participate in the year-long fundraising efforts to benefit the event's sole beneficiary, Four Diamonds at Penn State Children's Hospital.
The Four Diamonds funds research for pediatric cancer and annually provides assistance for about 600 children and their families who receive treatment for cancer at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.
In 2020, Thon has generated the funds to support:
- 7,798 weeks of psychological counseling at Penn State Children's Hospital
- 58,485 days of nutritional therapy at Penn State Children's Hospital
- 16,246 days of outpatient child life support
- 4,679 weeks of lab experiments looking for a cure for childhood cancer
- 7,798 weeks for a team of specialized nurse coordinators to manage all patient needs
- 11,140 weeks of prescription drug co-pay coverage for a child
