A power-play goal by Jonna Curtis early in the third period started a four-goal run by the Minnesota Whitecaps, turning their game into a 6-1 rout of the Buffalo Beauts on Saturday at Northtown Center in Amherst.
The second-place Whitecaps, the defending National Women’s Hockey League champions, led 2-1 before Curtis scored at 1:44 of the third period.
Goals by Meaghan Pezon, Nina Rodgers, and Brooke White-Lancette followed. The last Minnesota goal came with 53 seconds left to play.
Meghan Lorence of the Whitecaps opened the scoring at 2:55 of the first period. Kristin Lewicki of the Beauts tied it at 8:44 with Taylor Accursi and Richelle Skarbowski assisting.
Minnesota regained the lead when Pezon scored the first of her two goals at 17:01. It stayed that way until Curtis’ goal in the third.
Former Beaut Amanda Leveille and Allie Morse split the goaltending for the Whitecaps and faced 23 shots. Tiffany Hsu was in goal for Buffalo and had 44 shots fired at her, including 19 in the second period
when she shut out the Whitecaps.
Pezon, with her two goals, was named the game’s first star. Curtis with a goal and an assist was the second star while Lewicki of the Beauts was the third star.
Minnesota (13-5-1) has won four of the five games against the Beauts (7-12-1) this season. Buffalo’s only win came at Northtown Center on Nov. 24, 4-3.
The second-last home game on the Beauts’ regular season was “Teddy Bear Toss” day at the Amherst arena. Sunday’s series finale against the Whitecaps will be unique in that the Beauts will be available in stations where fans can join them for fun photographs.
Buffalo’s regular season will close with games against the Metropolitan Riveters at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and 4:30 p.m. on March 1 at ProSkate in Monmouth Junction,
N.J.
The Boston Pride (22-1) has already clinched the NWHL regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Minnesota has two home games against the last-place Connecticut Whale next weekend before the playoffs begin on March 8. Boston’s only loss was at Minnesota, 4-3, on Jan. 25.
Boston defeated Connecticut, 3-0, on Saturday at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. as the opener of the first NWHL-AHL doubleheader. Bridgeport Sound Tigers met the Hershey Bears in the AHL game.
