How much will coronavirus cost Disney? - OCRegister

Is coronavirus really that big a threat?

It might be to Disney’s bottom line. Disney closed its Shanghai Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland theme parks last month as Chinese authorities looked to keep people at home to limit the spread of the outbreak. Earlier this month, the company estimated that the parks could remain closed for two months, costing Disney $175 million in revenue.

That’s a lot of cheese, even for Mickey. If the parks remain closed for two months, that would exceed the five and seven weeks that Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea were closed after the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

But what about here in the United States? Reports of a few cases here have inspired concern across the country. A couple weeks ago I flew to Orlando and saw more facemasks at LAX than I saw during all of last year’s Halloween Horror Nights. While the Disney’s other theme parks around the world have remained open, coronavirus could affect them if it leads to a global decline in tourism as people choose to stay home rather than take the chance of getting sick on the road.

Travel is my job. And I can’t work well when I am sick, so finding ways to stay healthy while traveling has become a top priority in my life. I need good information about what works and what doesn’t — not panic and rumors.

Sure, it would be wonderful if every sick person simply stayed home until they were well again. It also would be wonderful if we could reschedule vacation time from work or school with a moment’s notice, and all airfares and hotel charges were fully refundable if you got sick. But that’s not the world we live in at the moment, so sick people are going to travel.

What can the rest of us do in defense? I get a flu shot and wish that everyone else who physically could would do the same. That goes for all available vaccines, too.

Spare me the complaints about Evil Big Pharma. Hey, it’s possible to believe at the same time that some of America’s pharmaceutical companies are run by greedy executives who put profits above public health … and that vaccines are well-tested, safe and effective in keeping people healthy from infectious disease.

There’s no vaccine for this coronavirus (yet), nor is there one for the common cold. So I also never leave for the airport without a travel pack of disinfectant wipes to clean everything on and around my airplane seat that my skin might touch.

I wipe down the seat back in front of me, the tray table and the entertainment screen, as well as the seatbelt tab and buckle and armrests. If the headrest is vinyl, I wipe that, too. If I’ve got the window seat, I will wipe down the wall and the window shade, just in case I doze off and my face rests against them. Wash your hands before eating or touching your face, as well, to further limit your exposure.

Hey, it’s worked for me. And I hope that my advice works for you, too. Don’t let fear keep you from traveling when there are good ways to protect yourself.
