How influenza is much more of a threat to Americans than coronavirus right now - OCRegister

The novel coronavirus outbreak in China has been in the headlines, and several people in California are being monitored for the virus. Although there are just a handful of coronavirus-related cases locally, more than 200 people have died in the state from other influenza-related causes this season. People over 65 are in the highest risk group.

Click the image below to see the dashboard tracking coronavirus spread around the world was built by a team at the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering and is regularly updated with data from the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other sources, to illustrate how the virus is spreading in China and beyond.

Flu magnitude

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, Influenza is of greater concern than coronavirus locally. The outbreak in China has grown from more than 4,600 confirmed cases, 106 deaths and 79 people recovered Jan. 28 to 34,963 cases, 725 deaths and 2,394 recoveries on Saturday. Most cases are in mainland China. As of Saturday Feb. 8 there were 12 cases confirmed in the U.S. and the CDC is in the process of its largest quarantine in 50 years. By comparison, an estimated 45 million people contracted influenza in the U.S. in the 2017-18 season, with 61,000 deaths.

Deaths decliningThe number of deaths from the flu has declined steadily while vaccination availability has increased. So far during the 2019-20 season, more than 170 million vaccinations were given, up from 155 million in 2018-19.

Sickest month

Number of times each month was the flu season peak from 1982 to 2016.

EffectivenessJust because you get a flu shot does not mean you won’t get the flu. The CDC estimates that 40% to 50% of people who get vaccinated still might get the flu. But 59% of those vaccinated that got the flu were able to avoid the ICU.

2019-2020 season

The CDC nationwide tracking of the flu season shows a drop-off in late December and then another spike in mid-January.As of Jan. 27, forecasts indicate flu activity is likely to remain elevated through the rest of the month.

Flu forecast

The CDC has an online beta version for epidemic prediction initiative that shows influenza being tracked throughout the U.S. Here’s what the forecast is showing on predict.cdc.gov.

Tips for prevention

Should you wear a surgical mask? The CDC recommends vaccination as the best way to battle influenza. The harmful viruses are mainly spread when infected people cough or sneeze, releasing small, virus-containing droplets into the air. Masks are helpful to protect from breathing in harmful droplets.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include:

  • Regular hand washing
  • Covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing

Overall, 78% of workers say they wash their hands often, but 72% of Americans typically go to work when they are sick.
