Boys basketball: Marin Catholic sharpshooters too much for Drake - Marin Independent Journal

Drake High’s defense held Marin Catholic’s lethal trio of shooters in check during the first quarter of the MCAL semifinals on Wednesday night.

But once junior guard Nick Greenwood found his shooting stroke in the second quarter, it didn’t take long for the hot hand to become contagious among the top-seeded Wildcats. They exploded for five 3-pointers in the frame — two by Nick Greenwood, two by Kyle Winters and one by Jack Greenwood — to pull away for a 52-45 victory over the Pirates that sends top-seeded MC marching into the championship game against No. 2 Branson.

In the last meeting between the top two seeds, the Wildcats (21-6) handed the Bulls their first MCAL loss in nearly two years.

“I think it’s usually only a matter of a time with the shooters we have from the outside, between the Greenwoods and Kyle (Winters), that they start looking for each other and feeding each other and making the extra pass,” MC head coach Mike Saia said. “They’ve been doing that all year. They trust that eventually they’re going to get good looks.”

Winters, in particular, showed impressive poise as the sophomore poured in a team-high 19 points. During the Wildcats’ pivotal second-quarter run, Winters bounced back from an airball to knock down a deep triple on the next possession.

“Coach has told us, ‘Keep shooting,'” Winters said. “They were slowing the game down in the first quarter, but he just said, ‘Keep it going.’ All year, he always tells us, ‘Just keep letting it fly.’ He trusts us — he knows we’re the best shooting team in the county.”

“(Winters is) a sophomore?” Saia chuckled. “He plays like a senior.”

Another sophomore, Drake forward Will Heimbrodt, helped the Pirates weather MC’s barrage from deep by responding with consistent buckets in the paint. Heimbrodt tallied 12 of Drake’s 17 points in the first half en route to a game-high 20 points.

The Pirates (11-15) refused to roll over in the third quarter. Junior guard Casey Borgonovo came alive to score nine points in the frame, Heimbrodt added another six and Jonas Salk put back his own miss before the buzzer to cut the Drake’s deficit to seven points entering the fourth quarter.

MC’s lead shrunk to just five points when Borgonovo (14 points) spun through the lane and finished a lefty layup with a little over a minute to play. But Nick Greenwood erased any hopes of an upset with a dagger on the ensuing possession, a corner three that sealed the victory for the Wildcats.

Branson wins

Lukas Prongos had 21 points to lead Branson back into the MCAL title game following a 61-43 win against Tam. Miles Keeffe added 13 points while Peyton Mullarkey scored six for the Bulls (25-2), who face Marin Catholic in Friday’s final at Redwood High.

“(Mullarkey) played a really good floor game and was the floor general out there, getting us organized,” Branson coach Jonas Honick said.

Xavier Williams paced Tam (18-9) with 12 points while Tyler Reed had 10 and Devin Mims scored seven.

“They were pretty tough,” Honick said. “They defended well, had a good scheme on how to defend us. The press bothered us at times but we figured out a way.”

The Bulls will look to avenge their only MCAL loss on Friday against the Wildcats.

“We’re going to take a good hard look at the last MC game where they beat us and try to figure them out a little bit better this time,” Honick said.
