The firefighting and repair effort on the Twenty-Five Mile Fire off south Lake Chelan will be reduced from about 300 personnel to 60 or 70 by Sunday as a mostly local team assumes command.
The fire was at 62 percent containment this morning after burning more than 22,000 acres since first being reported Aug. 15.
The fire initially led to widespread Level 3 evacuation notices but all notices were lifted by Sept. 13.
For weeks, crews have used firing measures and trenching to isolate the fire in more remote and unpopulated areas.
Matt Rau, incident command trainee for Southwest Area Incident Management Team 3, said this morning about 70 percent of the repair work on roads damaged by heavy equipment and damage done by dozer lines has been completed.
“The primary goal of our team was to wrap up the suppression repair and rehabilitation work that had been caused by the direct suppression efforts on the incident,” Rau said.
The Type 3 team that will officially take over Saturday, includes U.S. Forest Service personnel and local crews.
The current fire team is expecting moderate fire behavior through the weekend. Any fire growth is expected to be isolated in unburned pockets of the interior fire area, the management team said.
