PHILIPPI — Behind four touchdowns by DeShawn Webster, Philip Barbour snapped a 22-game losing streak with a 47-20 win over Elkins Friday night in Big 10 Conference action at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park.

The Colts (1-2, 1-2 Big 10), who with the win defeated the Tigers for the first time since the 2013 season, jumped out to the early lead in the contest when Webster scored his first touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run at the 3:36 mark of the first quarter.

Philip Barbour extended the margin to 12-0 with 7:41 left in the second quarter when quarterback Jesiah Matlick completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Cody Cooper.

After an Elkins turnover on the ensuing drive, Webster struck again on an 11-yard touchdown scamper to push the deficit to 20-0 with 4:30 remaining in the opening half.

The Tigers (0-4, 0-4) cut the hosts lead to 20-8 when Todd Vandevender scored on a 4-yard run with 2:14 left in the first half. The touchdown was set up by a Nick Bowers 56 yard run. Javier Rosario ran in the two-point conversion.

A long return by the Colts’ Kayden Humphreys on the ensuing kickoff put the ball deep in Elkins territory at the 30-yard line. Six plays later Webster scored his third touchdown of the game on a 2-yard run to make it 27-8 with 28 seconds to play in the half.

On its opening drive of the second half, Philip Barbour extended the deficit to 33-8 when Matlick threw his second touchdown strike of the game, a short pass to Webster at the 6:40 mark. 13

Matlick hooked up with Cooper again on a 6-yard touchdown reception late in the third stanza to push the Colts’ lead to 41-8 after a two-point conversion pass from Layna Grassi to Webster.

The Tigers found the endzone again with 10:07 to play when Bowers broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run, cutting Philip Barbour’s lead to 41-14.

The Colts answered back with 5:56 remaining in the contest when Ethan Floyd scored a 7-yard touchdown to make it 47-14.

Elkins ended the scoring in the game when Ethan McCarty scored a 3-yard touchdown with nine seconds left in regulation.

Bowers paced the Tigers offense on the night with 115 yards rushing. Rosario followed with 74 yards on the ground.

Elkins is scheduled to play its first home game since the 2019 season when it entertains Grafton next Friday.
