The now-unsuccessful Gavin Newsom recall election is expected to cost the state of California and its taxpayers a pretty penny, likely to the tune of more than $300 million.
The final estimate issued by the California Secretary of State in July was $276 million, with all California counties estimated to have spent $243.6 million and the California Secretary of State allotted $32.4 million. An initial estimate, released about a month prior, had priced the election to be about $60 million cheaper.
In an interview with ABC News, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber said that the state had already spent that $276 million sum as of Election Day, and will likely blow past that in the days to come.
"The budget committee and the state Assembly acknowledges that it can go higher," Weber told the outlet. "We could see $300 million or more spent on this election."
It is unclear where the increased expenditures are coming from, though Weber largely attributed the sky-high costs to the century-old recall system, according to ABC News.
If the recall campaign had started in 2022 and this election were rolled up with other state and federal elections, it would have cost $90.6 million, according to the Secretary of State's July estimate.
The cost of the recall was one talking point in pro-Newsom advertising in the months leading up to the election, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. bringing up the recall "costing taxpayers millions" in a July spot for Newsom.
This also does not take into account how much individual recall candidates and Newsom have spent on campaigning. Newsom and other anti-recall supporters raised approximately $72 million as of early September, which the Los Angeles Times estimates was double that of pro-recall forces.
