Seth MacFarlane is so sick of Tucker Carlson that he’s apparently ready to say sayonara to Fox. The Family Guy creator said as much on Twitter Sunday, criticizing the company that has aired his irreverent animated sitcom for over 19 years. Much to MacFarlane’s chagrin, Fox Entertainment is a corporate sibling of Fox News, the conservative “news” network which Carlson has used to spread conspiracy theories about coronavirus, the COVID-19 vaccine, and the January 6th insurrection.
“Tucker Carlson’s latest opinion piece once again makes me wish Family Guy was on any other network,” MacFarlane tweeted. “Look, Fox, we both know this marriage isn’t working anymore. The sex is only once a year, I don’t get along with your mother and well… I’ve been having an affair with NBC.”
The affair MacFarlane cheekily alludes to is the $200 million deal he made in January 2020 with NBCUniversal’s UCP, parting ways with his longtime studio and creative incubator, the entity once known as 20th Century Fox. This is not the first time MacFarlane has expressed his frustration with the network and its parent company. In April 2020, MacFarlane tweeted, “I really cannot fathom that we produce content for the same corporation,” to Fox News host Laura Ingraham after she claimed that the Washington Post wanted the shutdown to continue indefinitely. In 2018, he said he was “embarrassed” to work for Fox because of Carlson.
MacFarlane might be embarrassed to be affiliated with Carlson for any number of reasons—but most recently, the list includes Carlson insinuating that Dr. Anthony Fauci created the pandemic; comparing vaccines to “sterilization;” and advocating for teachers to wear body cameras to make sure that they don’t teach [checks notes] Critical Race Theory. Unfortunately for MacFarlane, Fox has renewed Family Guy through its 21st season—so his marriage to the network and his strained brother-in-law relationship with Carlson and Fox News is doomed to continue.
