The New England Patriots did well but could have done better in the NFL draft. Why is that?
First, and frankly foremost, the Patriots hit a home run with Mac Jones. They could have done better after that pick. Now, having a dual-threat quarterback is really nice, I liked it too.
Yet, frankly, the Patriots have no idea how to use a dual-threat, RPO-type quarterback, anyway. Their use of Cam Newton last season is indication enough. They are clueless about using that type of quarterback.
They didn’t take one and maybe by serendipity, luck, karma, or whatever, Jones, very possibly the best quarterback fit in the draft for the New England Patriots, fell into their lap at pick No. 15 in the first round.

So, it says here, the Patriots hit a home run in drafting their next franchise quarterback. Jones is a technician, a tactician, and he’s a winner’s winner.
Jones will use whatever resources available to him (maybe not the best in New England) with great accuracy and superb ball preservation.
He’ll put the assets they have to their best use possible. They need better receivers. But, they are what they are.
So, how could the draft have been better for the New England Patriots
First of all, they needed a young offensive tackle. They passed. It was a major mistake. This can’t be overemphasized. A very big gaffe.
Second, the Patriots’ draft history on defensive tackles is not good. It’s terrible. Really bad. Blown picks all over the place on high draft picks. They also are quite loaded at the edge after free agency.
So, what positions do they draft, trading up in the second round to select defensive tackle, Christian Barmore, and process throwing in two fourth-round picks. Then in the third round, they selected an edge player, Ronnie Perkins.
Now hopefully Barmore is the next Richard Seymour. He’s been compared to that great former Patriot. That’s a bit of a stretch, now isn’t it? Seymour was an overall 6th pick in the draft and should be a Hall-of-Famer. Barmore fell into the second round.
If so, absolutely great. But, the Patriot’s track record in drafting defensive tackles is not good. Essentially, a list of flops. Hopefully, Barmore is not one of them.
Now maybe Barmore will be great, Hope so. But, the most pressing need after the quarterback was at offensive left tackle. Bar none. Their current offensive left tackle options are injury-prone.
In addition, the Patriots have added several free-agent defensive tackles to their roster in free agency. It was a much lesser need for this rebuilding squad. Not a prudent decision.

New England Patriots failed to address offensive line depth
So the New England Patriots still did not address the offensive tackle position even in the third round. In addition, they had once again already significantly fortified the edge with key reinforcements in free agency.
In short, they had much more pressing needs elsewhere than defensive tackle and edge. Those are totally ill-advised draft-wide poor decisions.
This team is now faced with little quality offensive tackle depth should Isaiah Wynn and or Trent Brown, who are both susceptible to injury are out of the lineup for an extended period.
That’s just not a great situation. They blew an A in this draft on the two picks in the second and third rounds
They needed that offensive tackle depth, and that talent was available in the second round. Big, solid tackles like Sam Cosmi and Jackson Carman would have likely been there, but they passed.
And the opportunity cost of throwing in those two valuable fourth-round picks could also be very costly in other positions.
Pollyannas thinking that sixth-round pick William Sherman is that depth guy are frankly overestimating things. Let’s be realistic. He’s the size of a smaller guard. He’s no Michael Onwenu.
So there it is, the argument why the New England Patriots could have aced their 2021 draft and now have to settle for a B grade. Thankfully, there were no picks that no one had heard of.
That’s a good thing. Bob Kraft wanted results. We’ll see if he gets them Jones should be really good, and hopefully big back, Rhamondre Stevenson will be, as well. Big needs filled.
Let’s see how they and all the others pan out. You never know until they play the games. That’s the mystery of the draft. You just never know.
