How much rain did the area receive overnight? - Grand Forks Herald

The highest rain totals in the region accrued in Argyle, Minn., where an aerial flood warning has been issued through 3:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon, May 20. Flooded fields full of standing water can be seen throughout the area, Whitmyer said, and he cautioned drivers planning to travel on some dirt and gravel roadways.

"We're not really anticipating those concrete roads to be flooded out from these showers and thunderstorms that we're expecting today," he said. "Nonetheless any area that does have a shower or thunderstorm it easily could be dealing with that good old fashioned road ponding, which is just, you know, ponds or water on the roadways that we have to watch out for."

Other rainfall totals from around the area include: 4.03 inches in Jamestown, 2.19 inches in Stephen, 2.08 inches in Courtenay, 1.71 inches in Alvarado, 1.62 inches in McHenry, 1.03 inches in Warren, 0.95 inches in Cooperstown and Kennedy, 0.44 inches in Greenbush, and 0.11 inches in Grafton.

Scattered thunderstorms continue throughout the day, and Grand Forks in particular could be in for some strong to severe thunderstorms, he said, including the possibility of a few isolated landspout tornado between Grand Forks and Fargo.

The chance of a tornado warning in the area is extremely low on Thursday, Whitmyer said.

Other weather-related threats such as hail remain very low, with risks increasing south of Grand Forks. Whitmyer estimates that there's a low chance for less than an inch of nickel-sized hail in the area.

"The best chance for more of that is going to be mainly south of Grand Forks, where I think the instability will be a little bit better," Whitmyer said.

As storms continue throughout the day, temperatures will stay warm, with temperatures in the upper 60s near Grand Forks, in the 50s near the Canadian border and in the high 80s near Fargo.

Unsettled weather is expected to last throughout the rest of the week and into Memorial Day weekend.

Temperatures are expected to warm up around Grand Forks by Friday. The StormTracker Team forecasts a high of about 80 degrees in Grand Forks Friday and a low of 58 degrees with a 40% chance of precipitation with widely scattered thunderstorms.

Temperatures will cool off into the 60s and 70s over the weekend. A high of 68 degrees and a low of 48 degrees is forecast on Saturday, again with widely scattered thunderstorms, and on Sunday the forecast shows a high of 63 degrees and a low of 52 degrees with a 20% chance of precipitation.
