Wild in favor of Monday's postponement: 'There's much bigger things going on here' - Duluth News Tribune

Wild captain Jared Spurgeon said players and coaches used to postponement as a time to reflect on Daunte Wright’s death and the multiple emotions that followed across the Twin Cities.

“You immediately stop thinking about that game,” Spurgeon said. “There’s much bigger things going on here than the hockey game last night.”

The news of Wright’s death in Brooklyn Center sparked protests across the Twin Cities with members of the community calling for justice. Less than 10 miles away, in downtown Minneapolis, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for charges of murder and manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd.

Needless to say, the temperature in the Twin Cities has been rising for much of the past year, and because of that, Wild veteran Ian Cole felt postponing Monday’s game was the right thing to do. There was no need for a hockey game on that particular night.

“It’s tough to digest,” Cole said. “Taking a bit of a pause there to genuflect, and look at it, and try to figure out how to best digest it, and what action to take, I think that was a good move at the time.”

Asked about the conversations going on in the locker room, Spurgeon said, “We talk about stuff every day. We are a very tight-knit group. There’s nothing that isn’t on the table to be talked about.”

Though the exact dialogue is unknown to anyone outside of the locker room, Cole said each conversation is rooted in teammates wanting to understand each other.

“If you genuinely care about your teammates and view them as your family, you can have tough conversations,” he said. “Regardless of the other person’s viewpoint, or where they’re coming from, or their situation, or whatever the case may be, you know you can respect them, and talk to them, and discuss these tough things. And I think that’s the best way to do it. Just come from a place of love and try to understand as best you can.”

As for Wednesday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes, which has be rescheduled with a 1 p.m. start time, Cole made it clear the Wild are committed to playing that game, as well as keeping the conversation going moving forward.

“There’s conversations being had in the locker room and you can park the hockey and get back to important things,” Cole said. “I think our job is to play hockey and we get paid to do that so tomorrow at 1 o’clock we will be ready to play hockey, and before that game, or after that game, we’ll certainly be able to let the mind wander elsewhere.”
