With the No. 25 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Clemson running back Travis Etienne, the team’s second pick in the first round.
In 12 games in 2020, Etienne had 168 rushing attempts for 914 yards (5.4 yards per carry) and 14 rushing touchdowns, as well as 48 catches for 588 yards and two additional touchdowns, as a senior. Overall, Etienne recorded 686 rushing attempts for 4,952 yards (7.2 yards per carry) with 70 touchdowns, and 102 catches for 1,155 yards and eight more scores receiving, throughout his college career.
Etienne had a very accomplished college career, earning ACC player of the year in 2018 and 2019. He was also a consensus All-American selection in 2018 and 2020, and earned All-ACC honors every year he was on Clemson’s campus (third-team in 2017 and first team in 2018, 2019 and 2020). Of course, Etienne was also college teammates with quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville’s No. 1 overall selection.
The team had many holes to fill on the roster, so addressing running back this early is somewhat surprising. With James Robinson coming off of a 1,070-yard performance as an undrafted rookie last season, this is an interesting pick for the Jaguars at the running back position. With that said, head coach Urban Meyer wants to add speed to the team, and Etienne ran a 4.41-second 40-yard dash at his pro day. Robinson, Etienne and Carlos Hyde could form an intriguing trio in the backfield.
