AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - The Masters is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, and people from all over want tickets. But this year, the ticket market is quite different, but not for the reason you'd probably expect.
If you're trying to get into the Masters this year, it's even more difficult than it has been in the past because of the limited number of patrons being allowed inside. Many had to jump through hoops just to make the cut.
“I know somebody who knows somebody.” - Danny Freeman, patron
“I am incredibly fortunate to have incredible, incredible friends and I just, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and it blows my mind.” - Haley Higgs, patron
That’s one way to work your way inside one of the most exclusive Masters tournaments in history. Or you can try to buy a ticket this way. But it’ll cost you; in some cases about thirteen times or more what a day-pass actually costs.
“I don’t know what they went for this morning but I guess, I don’t know, maybe $1500 is my guess,” says a roadside ticket buy who's been coming to Augusta to set up on Washington Rd. for over a decade. He's asked us not to reveal his identity. “There’s usually a flow of tickets going on and that flow is not going on really at all.”
The buyer hasn't seen many tickets this year, but he says it's given him time to sit and reflect on the past. He says in 2019, tickets were the highest he'd ever seen. “Rumor had it there were guys from Nike walking around with thousands and thousands of dollars in briefcases and buying up badges because like Nike had to accommodate their customers and when it starts getting corporate that’s when It really starts getting interesting out here.”
He says badge resale value is high this year, but not outrageous. “We have to remember too, demand is, while it’s lower capacity we also have to remember that people are still a little of iffy about COVID."
While it is tough to get in the gates, people are still trying. But the market for resale badges is much smaller than it would be a normal year. “It’s not like people it's you know game on in society and everyone’s coming out with a smaller demand no that smaller demand also reflects the fact that some people are just going to choose to stay home.”
In a nutshell, it’s a complicated market. Those who didn’t get a ticket seem to be more okay with that, given the pandemic. And those who were lucky enough to get a ticket… odds are, they’re not giving them up.
