Here is Warning No. 2: Don’t get too wrapped up into how the NFL is going to handle the coronavirus situation.
As I said in Warning No. 1, everything we hear until the announcement that the season will start on whatever date said announcement provides, is negotiating tactic.
A couple days after J.J. Watt posted his list of points about where the players stood, others around the league did the same getting the hashtag #WeWantToPlay trending on Twitter. Watt came back a second time Sunday with more of the same.
Sadly, as you could see from the replies to their posts, fans don’t care that much about the players. Most NFL players become well aware of this early in their careers.
It would be incredible that with as much time as the league and players had to work on issues related to the coronavirus, that they are at the start of training camp and still don’t have a plan.
I contend much of the delay in formalizing it is that the owners have wanted to wait as long as possible in hopes that COVID-19 would just disappear. Only an idiot would think that is going to happen.
NFL owners are not idiots. On this, I will continue to give them the benefit of the doubt.
The league has rarely made a decision solely out of concern for player safety without being forced to do so. If this were only about player safety, the league would suspend its season until there are more assurances against the virus leading to a tragedy in the NFL family.
That is the least likely scenario. The league doesn’t want that and neither do the players.
Hence the hashtag #WeWantToPlay instead of #WeWantToBeSafe.
At some point, the two sides will reach an agreement and prepare for games.
Until then, the back-and-forth over the frequency of tests, how to quarantine anyone who tests positive, how to maintain COVID-free facilities, etc. is just noise.
