
How much do you tip on $26 worth of bagel sandwiches?
On this particular Sunday, I decide the correct answer is $20 and add it to a lonely tip jar at the bagel shop around the corner from my house while doing the math: it's a 76% tip, which somehow still feels too low.
We've been sheltered in place for seven weeks to help slow the spread of a global pandemic, and I've spent some amount of time each week anxiously weighing how much more money I need to leave every time I buy anything.
What's the gratuity multiple for a delivery person who regularly exposes themself to a coronavirus that has killed a quarter of a million people globally in less than four months? Is it twice as much? Three times? And how much more do you leave on top for a business you love that's pulling in a fraction of the revenue? Four times? Five times?
I decide to ask Aya Ahn, co-owner of beloved SF donut shop Bob's Donuts.
"I had a customer who left a $35 tip for a $5 doughnuts purchase," she tells me.
