Heavy rain update: How much fell, how much more as flood warnings expand - MLive.com

Heavy rain has fallen across areas of Michigan. Another round of a substantial rainy period is going to hit some areas this afternoon and tonight. Let’s take a quick look at what to expect in the next 24 hours.

The heaviest rain so far has fallen in the west-central and southwest part of Lower Michigan. As of early this morning, Montague, MI in Muskegon County was closing in on four inches of rain so far.

Here’s a rundown of some of the heaviest rain reports so far in the past 24 hours.

Above are all of the locations that have reported 2.50″ of rain or more through mid-morning.

Another decent way to find out where the heaviest rain has fallen is to look at the rain totals from the doppler radars. We have to look at each radar separately right now. The composite of the three Lower Michigan radars hasn’t been produced yet.

How much more rain will fall from noon today through the end of the storm?

An area of heavy rain is moving into northern Lower for this afternoon. Also the next feed of heavy rain from the south is streaming into south-central Lower Michigan.

The radar forecast for this afternoon and tonight shows you what locations are in line for more heavy rain.

Radar forecast from noon today to noon Tuesday.

The rain is going to feed north into south-central Lower and gradually shift east into southeast Lower this afternoon and evening. The hardest hit areas of west-central Lower will have some good news in rain becoming more spotty.

Total new rain forecast from noon Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The data is clearly indicating another round of one to two inches of rain in a large area from Coldwater and Adrian north through the entire Jackson and Lansing areas. The inch-plus rain will continue north through most of northern Lower Michigan. A streak of one inch rains is possible in the Thumb. There could be isolated areas of three to four inch rains. All of the rain above is over and above what we have already received.

Flood warnings cover much of the Grand Rapids area and a large area surrounding Grand Rapids.

flood warnings

Bright green areas are under flood warnings through Tuesday at least.

The flood warnings are for several types of flooding. Low lying roadways could flood. Some rivers could rise out of their banks to what is forecast to be minor to moderate flooding. The typical poor drainage areas will have flooding. Use common sense and don’t drive through flooded areas. You car could stall, and you would have to be towed out. A worse case scenario is possible with a flowing current of water. Your car could be swept away in that event.

Rain will mostly be over by Tuesday morning. The very far southern border counties could have a few showers Tuesday morning. Then we can look ahead to a nice stretch of weather for several days.
