You’re getting your food ‘to go.’ How much do you tip? - syracuse.com

Are you the type of person who grumbles about the tip jar next to the cash register in the best of times? Do you anguish over how much to give to the pizza delivery guy?

How about now, during the coronavirus outbreak that has forced restaurants to move entirely to pick-up or delivery?

It turns out, Central New Yorkers seem to be in a generous mood these days -- even when they’re the ones venturing out to pick up their own food.

“When I look at our tip jar at the end of the day, I’m just so thankful for our customers and their support,” said Daryl McGrew, a partner at the Darwin on Clinton sandwich shop in downtown Syracuse. The breakfast and lunch place, which relies heavily on takeout business even in normal times, has seen a significant dip in the number of customers since so many downtown offices are closed.

But some of those who are stopping in are reaching deep into their pockets, McGrew said.

“There are people now who will pick up a $10 order and leave a $10 tip," he said. "We’ve had people drop some really big bills in the jar. It’s been amazing.”

Of course, not everyone can afford to be that generous. But the etiquette, so far, seems to be if you can leave a big tip, do it.

Some customers, at least, seem to realize the strain the coronavirus-enforced shut down of dining rooms has placed on the restaurants as well as themselves. Many restaurants have cut staff or limited their hours, and some have closed altogether until the virus in under control.

“People seem to appreciate that we’re open since so many places are not,” said Nick Sanford, who closed his 40-seat Toss & Fire pizza dining room in North Syracuse but is offering curbside pick-up and delivery (mostly through GrubHub). “People know this is hard on everyone. Our tips, so far, are up from what we’d normally see."

And it goes beyond tips.

At Munjed’s Middle Eastern Cafe on Westcott Street, some customers are even refusing to take the discounts the restaurant is offering to medical, police, fire and military personnel, said owner Sam Essi.

“For the most part our customers have been generous tipping the cashier, and most of them even have turned down our promotions, as they’re happy to still be able to get takeout," Essi said.

So what should the tip be? In normal times, according to many experts, a food delivery tip should be about 10% of the bill. Servers at restaurants -- when they’re open -- typically get 15% (or 20% for high-quality service).

And the tip jar when you’re at the counter or register? It’s completely optional in normal times.

But these aren’t normal times.

At MarketWatch.com, personal finance editor and columnist Quenton Fottrell recently took a look at the ethics involved in tipping workers who are “potentially putting themselves in harm’s way.”

He suggests boosting the amount you normally tip if you can.

“My recommendation: Tip service-industry workers 5% more, if you can afford it," he wrote. "For me, that’s 25%. Likewise, if you usually tip 10%, perhaps consider 15%.”

He went further, pointing out that a few kind words can also help.

“There’s one thing (almost) better than an extra dollar,” he wrote. “Acknowledging that people in the service industry are turning up for work.”
