Much to gain for HSU rowers at first competition of the year - Eureka Times-Standard

The bulk of competition for Humboldt State’s women’s rowing team might be booked for the spring 2022 semester, but the team will have a good test of skill on the water this weekend.

The team is competing at the Head of the Lagoon race in Foster City. The invite-only regatta will give the team some racing experience and an opportunity to test itself against other high-caliber competitors.

Head coach Matt Weise said the team’s excited.

“You can see the excitement going in and having these competitions just allows the team to train at a little higher level and get more excited,” he said.

The green-and-gold rowers will be participating in four women’s races, the novice 4+, collegiate 4+, novice 8+, and collegiate 8+, with one entry in each mode.

With a young team under his watch, Weise has had to adapt his training to his rowers.

“I’ve really become a novice, first-year coach again. The team is so young that we basically started from scratch… We’re just getting into some of the training now compared to where we are usually in the spring if we had a team full of juniors and seniors,” the coach said.

The former Michigan State coach believes that for a team of this stature racing at the Head of the Lagoon is sure to bring them much more than what regular practice and workouts ever can. He believes the team can potentially push itself to new terrain in the heat of competition.

“That’s what competition can do for you, right? It can help you be a little bit better as you get that emotional high you can only get on race day. It can push us to be a bit more aggressive than normal so that halfway through the race you don’t know if you’re going to make it to the end,” Weise elaborated.

“It’s essential, because come springtime, you want them to learn how to be nervous in the right way. You want them to learn how to be excited with those nerves and you can only get that by racing,” he added.

Part of the mindset and intensity Weise hopes his pupils learn to master includes matching effort with technique so that the effort can be paired with the finer, long-stroke motion required to compete at a high level.

“You don’t want to be so technical that you don’t row hard enough,” he simplified.

The Humboldt State rowers will be facing off against Sacramento State, UC Berkeley, Stanford, University of Washington, Saint Mary’s and collegiate clubs including Chico State and Sonoma State at the Head of the Lagoon.
