Game Recap: Football | | by Mike Lund

Sacramento, CA – The fog rolled in on Hornet Stadium on Saturday night and lingered. At the same time the game got cloudy for Portland State as the mistake-prone Vikings lost to Sacramento State, 49-20, at Hornet Stadium.

PSU had four first-half turnovers and couldn't recover. The loss effectively dashed Portland State's playoff hopes as the Vikings drop to 5-5 on the season, 4-3 in the Big Sky.

The 12th-ranked Hornets continued their romp through the Big Sky Conference, winning their seventh game in a row and ending the Vikings' three-game winning streak. Sacramento State is now 8-2 on the season, 7-0 in the Big Sky, and has a chance at the league title next week at UC Davis.

The Hornets also showed their versatility, throwing for 229 yards in the first half, then rushing for 205 yards in the second half when they had a comfortable lead. For the game, Sacramento State totaled 543 yards. Portland State finished with 405 yards of offense.

"Before the game we talked about the defense eliminating the big plays and penalties and the offense not turning the ball over. We couldn't do it against a very talented football team," said Viking Coach Bruce Barnum.

"Bottom line though, after all this team has been through, to be where we were at in November, I'm proud of this group. We were in a spot for possible playoffs but we got beat by a good football team. So, we have one more game together this season, seven more days, so we're going to make sure we enjoy it. This is a good group, a special group."

Sacramento State marched down the field quickly on the opening series, getting to the PSU 6-yard line. But back-to-back tackles for loss by Tevita Tuitavake and Anthony Adams forced the Hornets back and into a 30-yard field goal.

In the Hornets final drive of the first quarter they got to the Viking 7-yard line. Another tackle for loss by VJ Malo and Parker McKenna, a pass breakup by Broderick Harrell, and again the Hornets had to settle for a 31-yard field goal. Sacramento State led 6-0 with 14:43 to play in the half.

Portland State quarterback Davis Alexander felt a lot of pressure early and was unable to complete the ball downfield on a Hornet defense that ranks fourth in the Big Sky Conference, but then came the Jalynnee McGee drive.

The freshman running back carried eight times for 53 yards and caught a pass for four yards in a 16-play, 90-yard scoring march for the Vikings. Wide receiver Darien Chase completed the series with a seven-yard reception in the back right corner of the endzone.

In that brief moment the Vikings were the first team to hold a lead on Sacramento State in five games, albeit just 7-6. And the lead did not last long. Devin Gandy returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. A two-point conversion gave the Hornets a 14-7 lead.

A late first-half drive by the Vikings was thwarted when Alexander was picked off in the endzone by Hornets' cornerback Greg Filer. After an Adams fumble recovery, Portland State had another chance inside the final minute. However, Alexander was intercepted again with 31 seconds left in the half.

Sacramento State followed with a 59-yard pass from Jake Dunniway to Gandy. Dunniway then hit Cameron Skattebo on a four-yard score just 19 seconds before halftime.

After four first-half turnovers, the Vikings were fortunate to trail only 21-7 at the break. The Hornets had 259 yards at halftime to 186 for the Vikings.

Sacramento State scored on its first two drives in the second half to boost the lead to 35-7 with 7:22 left in the third quarter.

Portland State finally found the endzone with 3:52 left in the third. Malik Walker went in from one yard out. Walker also had a 41-yard run to highlight the 65-yard drive.

With a big lead, the Hornets stayed with the ground game to burn clock and it paid off. They added two rushing TDs in the fourth quarter to prevent a Viking comeback.

PSU tacked on a late touchdown on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Alexander to Beau Kelly.

Alexander threw for 231 yards and two scores, but also had three interceptions. Chase caught nine passes for 73 yards and a score. Kelly had 68 yards on three catches.

Walker finished with 97 rushing yards and a touchdown. McGee had 63 yards on 10 carries.

Adams finished with a big game, making six tackles, two tackles for loss, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Xavier Bell led the team with nine tackles.

GAME NOTES
  • Anthony Adams fumble recovery late in the second quarter was his third of the season, and his sixth takeaway of the season… with 31 career pass breakups, he is now two shy of the school record.
  • Beau Kelly has 62 receptions for 855 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
  • Malik Walker scored his 10th rushing touchdown of the season.
  • Broderick Harrell had six tackles and two pass breakups.
  • Portland State wraps up its regular season on Saturday, hosting nationally-ranked Eastern Washington (8-2, 5-2) at Hillsboro Stadium. Game time is 2:05 p.m. and it will be live streamed on ESPN+.
