For whatever reason, the Minnesota Twins seem to have the Cleveland Guardians’ number this season. The team from the Twin Cities improved to 8-5 against their division rival Monday night, racking up 12 hits en route to a 5-2 win at Progressive Field.
All five of the Twins’ runs came against Cleveland starting pitcher Logan Allen. Allen was looking to build off of back-to-back quality starts since returning to the big leagues, but Minnesota spoiled those plans from the start. The first three batters of the game reached base, as Byron Buxton reached on an infield single, Jorge Polanco slugged the first of three doubles on the night, and Rob Refsnyder shot a two-run single to right field to give the Twins a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Allen gave up solo home runs to Polanco and Buxton in the third and fifth innings, respectively, before getting the hook in the sixth after allowing a one-out single to Brent Rooker. Rooker came around to score on an RBI single with Justin Garza on the mound, representing the fifth and final run charged to Allen. His final line: 5.1 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, and 4 K.
The Guardians didn’t offer Allen much support offensively. Their only runs of the game came on a two-run homer by Franmil Reyes in the fourth inning, which cut the Twins’ lead to 3-2. That was as close as Cleveland would get to rallying. They struggled against Minnesota starter Bailey Ober and fared even worse against Michael Pineda, who was activated from the injured list Monday and piggybacked off Ober’s start. Pineda only allowed two hits and one walk over three scoreless innings.
Cleveland failed to reach base in the final two frames.
