N.J. weather: How much rain will Hurricane Henri drop? Weather service warns of ‘increasing concern.’ - NJ.com

New Jersey is bracing for flash flooding, power outages and torrential downpours as Hurricane Henri bears down on the northeast.

But how much rain will the state see?

Two to 3 inches are likely across much of New Jersey, and as much as 6 inches of rain could fall in the hardest hit pockets of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

On Saturday evening, the National Weather Service in Mount Holly cited “increasing concern” for “very heavy rainfall,” and warned of showers, thunderstorms and the floods they could produce.

North Jersey is forecast to be the most impacted, and it has the highest risk of flooding. But the weather service said there is some risk throughout the region, and tropical storm force winds are possible in Middlesex and Monmouth counties.

Still, New Jersey’s potential rainfall pales to what is expected in Long Island or southeastern Connecticut, where Henri is slated to make landfall Sunday afternoon before continuing north into Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Accuweather predicts as much as 12 inches of rain in those places.

Henri was upgraded to a hurricane late Saturday morning. If it touched down on Long Island, it would mark the first hurricane to hit there since 1985.

In New Jersey, Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Union counties were under tropical storm warnings. On the coast, the weather service cautioned of dangerous seas and minor coastal flooding at high tide, and warned of strong rip currents through Monday.

But coastal flooding is not expected to be a major concern locally, the weather service said.
