COVID-19 has caused more than a few problems for people in Union Parish. Perhaps one of those most visible problems was overflowing dumpsters all over Union Parish. Sick workers combined with people stuck at home for weeks created an unsightly and smelly mess at dumpster sites all over the parish. This resulted in many complaints and litter court citations.
Jordan Powell, who lives in Downsville, saw the overflowing dumpsters, heard the many complaints and decided that just maybe he could help solve the trash issue and another problem at the same time. Powell lost his oil field job in March and needed to find another job.
He called his good friend, Dylan Scott, a Bastrop native who is now a well-known singer/songwriter in Nashville. “Jordan and I have known each other for over 10 years now. He used to ride up to Nashville with me and hang out and we have just been friends for several years,” said Scott. These two enterprising guys were discussing the trash problem in Union Parish and out of that phone call came a new and much needed business in Union Parish, The Trash Guys.
The Trash Guys officially opened for business November 2. This is a residential trash pick up service. “I saw all these people on Facebook saying they wished they had an alternative and there was no alternative,” said Powell. “There is definitely an issue with the dumpsters and definitely a need for this service,” he continued. There are many community members who are unable to haul their own trash. The elderly, the disabled and those with no transportation are just a few instances of those who could benefit from The Trash Guys. “I have talked to handfuls of people who are elderly or do not have a vehicle and their children or grandchildren are doing it for them,” said Powell.
The Trash Guys will pick up typical household trash once a week. This service will cost $30-35 depending on where you live in the parish. Trash must be in closed bags and the trash cans must have lids. Larger items like furniture, appliances or anything not considered normal household trash will not be picked up. If someone has large items that need to be hauled away, a request can be made and The Trash Guys will come and haul that away for an additional small fee. “If you give us a call, we can move larger items for a small fee. That is just an extra service we offer,” said Powell.
The need for this service in Union Parish is quite evident. The dumpsters overflow on a regular basis and there are many in the parish unable to haul their own trash. “Before we even started we had over 100 houses and hopefully we grow from there,” Scott said. The Trash Guys definitely have some long-term goals for this service. “Hopefully the service will grow and grow and grow into this massive operation and serve most of the residents of Union Parish,” said Powell.
While The Trash Guys is a joint venture, Powell will handle most of the day-to-day operations and logistics. Scott’s career keeps him in Nashville most of the time, but he wants clients to know they are in good hands. “Jordan is a hard worker and a great guy. But when I am not touring, don’t be surprised if you are drinking coffee one morning and you see me hop out of the Trash Guys truck,” laughs Scott.
If you are in need of residential trash pickup service, give The Trash Guys a call at 318-376-9111. They will be happy to add you to their growing service list. Scott encourages all residents to take advantage of this service, “I am excited to be a part of this. Call The Trash Guys today!”
