Safe guess here: Tiger Woods probably will be more careful about his conversations with Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas during Friday’s second round of the PGA Championship at Harding Park.
Woods, in Thursday’s first round, engaged McIlroy in a chat about major-league baseball as they stood on the No. 13 tee. Several club manufacturers made orange-and-black golf bags this week, to commemorate this major championship in Giants territory.
Woods has history in the Bay Area, given his two years at Stanford, but he has roots in Southern California (he grew up in Cypress). So he’s a longtime Dodgers fan and loathes the Giants, as he explained to McIlroy, a Northern Irishman who didn’t know much about one of baseball’s most historic rivalries.
ESPN picked up the conversation between Woods and McIlory, in which Tiger said of the orange-and-black bags, “I couldn’t do it.” He then asked McIlroy about his favorite soccer team, and McIlroy explained that he favors Manchester United, whose biggest rival is Liverpool.
“So that’d be like Liverpool f—ing colors on your bag,” Woods replied. “That’s how much we hate the Giants.”
Good thing for Woods that spectators aren’t allowed at Harding the rest of the week — Giants fans surely would hassle him for that comment.
Woods, McIlroy and Thomas tee off at 1:58 p.m. Friday.
Here’s a little clip of the conversation between Tiger and Rory about the Giants, ManU and sports.
