Eau Claire (WQOW) - We've all probably heard that it's important to limit our children's screen time, but how should parents reinforce that rule if their kids have online schooling this year?
Angela Mattke, a pediatrician with the Mayo Clinic Children's Center, said children learn social skills through play. So, too much time spent in front of a screen can limit the ability to learn or be physically active.
However, Mattke said educational screen time is different.
The time your child spends learning virtually is no different from the time they spend learning in a classroom. She said this type of screen time is unavoidable; it's time spent on playing games or watching videos that should be limited.
"We know that too much screen time is not good for physical, mental and emotional health of kids and their development," Mattke said. "So, if we can kind of keep it within reason, then go for it and create a plan, kind of stick to it. The most important thing is if you're going to start it, you have to follow through on it."
Mattke added parents should monitor their kids' recreational screen time by setting time limits or by having their children earn it as a reward for positive behavior.
She recommends children ages five and up should have no more than two hours of recreational screen time every day.
