High waters and flooding damage much of downtown Staunton - The News Leader

STAUNTON - Heavy rains and high water battered downtown Staunton Saturday night. 

Social media was a-flurry with videos of rising water and heavy flooding in downtown Staunton.

Central Augusta County and Staunton in western Virginia were under the evening flood warning Saturday night. Roads across the area were shutdown.

Police were stationed outside of the perimeter of downtown Staunton to help divert traffic late Saturday night. By 11:30 p.m. water had stopped rushing through most of the downtown area, but it still left a destructive path. 

Businesses in the downtown area of Staunton, including the historic Wharf district, sustained heavy water damage. As of Sunday morning, some businesses were cleaning up and others had put up large boards on their windows to keep water from entering. 

Chicano Boy Taco off Lewis Street had large boards on its front windows, but inside still had water inside the building as of Sunday.

One reader emailed photos of Gypsy Hill park and said that fences were demolished by the duck pond and other areas throughout the park. There were koi stranded in the grass and the gravel walking path had became a storm channel. The railway line for the Gypsy Hill express was washed away with chucks of the small stone bridge missing.

The flood peeled away parts of the lake parking lot too, according to photos.

Videos and posts on social media late Saturday night showed much of downtown Staunton underwater. As of Sunday, much of the water damage could be seen including ripped up sidewalks, car tires strewn about and heavy water damage to a variety of local businesses. 

A GoFundMe campaign had been started as of Sunday morning for those businesses downtown that sustained damage. More than $8,000 had been raised of of 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning, with a goal of $20,000.

Byers Street Bistro posted that the restaurant would be closed until further notice. 

"We are saddened to say that due to recent flooding, our restaurant is closed until further notice. This has been a very difficult year for us, our team members and our community, and this is one more major blow," the post said. "We ask that you please keep our team members and fellow Downtown businesses in your thoughts and prayers through this challenging time. We will be posting updates on social media over coming weeks so that you our valued guests can keep up to date on the status of our restaurant.”

Flooding late Saturday night encompassed much of downtown Staunton stretching all the way to Churchville Avenue and past West Beverley Street near Thornrose Cemetery.
