Mike Piazza on coronavirus: 'Stay isolated as much as possible' - New York Post

PORT ST. LUCIE — Mike Piazza and his family live in Italy. They came back to their home in Miami in February and opted to stay here.

Since then, scary times have come to Parma, where the Piazza family has found a home abroad, and to all of Italy, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I just talked to a close friend over there,’’ Piazza told The Post late Thursday night, “and what happened is that when they shut down the schools initially at the end of February, the Italians made a big mistake. They were all going to the piazza and having lunch and drinks and that was a big mistake because people had [the virus] and didn’t know it and were passing it on and made the situation a lot worse and now obviously the country is in a full lockdown. The biggest fear is the fear of the unknown. The fear of the darkness.

“You like to think you are prepared for these situations, but ultimately if there is a max sort of pandemic or you have an extraordinary amount of cases that needed to be treated, you just don’t have the infrastructure, so I think that is what is happening in Italy,’’ the Hall of Fame catcher said. “They made that mistake. Yes, you want to carry on a sense of normalcy, but the most important thing is to stay isolated as much as possible. Maintain your distance and do all the precautions. You have to be extra vigilant, we pray and we hope that it is at least somewhat contained and they can find some sort of way to deter the spread.’’

Piazza arrived in South Florida right before the Super Bowl. His wife and three children arrived on Valentine’s Day.

“They were supposed to go back for school while I did my thing in spring training, and the day before they were scheduled to leave, school was canceled,’’ Piazza explained.

The family stayed in Miami.

“It’s a very fortunate situation,’’ said Piazza, a deep believer in his Catholic faith. “We’ve gotten some tutors and the school has been offering online support. And of course we are praying for our friends. Italy is our home now in a way and the kids miss their friends and are very concerned. I’m just going to church more often and praying. In Parma, people are extremely worried and very humbled. I think everyone will appreciate their normal lives when we get back to that point.’’
